Col de Larche (or Maddalena Pass) between France and Italy - D205T-SP251/SP105 - Barcelonette and Cuneo. Previously Col de L'Argentiere linking Lyon and Italy during the reign of the House of Savoy. Tops out at 1996m, and still open. Photo from @FrejusExpress, same day delivery across Europe.

Col de Larche (or Maddalena Pass) between France and Italy – D205T-SP251/SP105 – Barcelonette and Cuneo. Tops out at 1996m, and still open, clearly (though you shouldn’t attempt it on summer tyres). Which mountain roads remain open over winter is subject of great interest at the moment. One such includes Switzerland’s 2328m Bernina Pass between St Moritz and Tirano in Italy. We shall return to this subject shortly. Photo from @FrejusExpress, same day delivery across Europe.

roundup: ROMANIA. Drivers failing to fit winter tyres in snow/ice conditions face fines of €400 says Snow is already falling at altitude in the northern Balkans and is expected to move south over the next days. Other winter essentials include a shovel, sand and snow chains. BELGIUM. Brussels will extend the pedestrian zone inside the R20 ‘Pentagon’ inner ring road from summer 2015. The area then barred to non-resident cars – and delivery vehicles outside set-times – will encompass pretty much the whole of the Pentagon centre extending north east out to R20 along Anspachlaan. Four new car parks are planned with a ‘dynamic’ signing system designed to get cars to places ASAP. See more here, including a map. ITALY. A third of municipalities in Lombardy, the region of north central Italy up to the Swiss border, capital Milan, will ban vehicles of less than Euro 3 emissions from cities during the day time from 15 October 2015 over air quality concerns. Currently only 156 out of 1,546 comuni are covered by Low Emission Zone (ZTL) rules, to increase to 517 according to Ertico. The ban will not include highways, regional roads and connecting roads. See more on ZTL here.
