High speed highway robbery: 125 iPads, four iPad minis, 30 iPhones and two Apple keyboards were stolen from the back of a Czech truck somewhere on the A44 near Dortmund earlier this week. The driver was unaware of the theft until he stopped at Kassel. Such robberies always raise eyebrows but at least fifty cases have been reported in this part of Germany since November 2012. The picture above is a screen grab from a film released by Romanian police in June 2012. Parcel services are most commonly targeted.

No ferry to Norway this summer

NO FERRY TO NORWAY FOR THE SUMMER.

Plans to revive the direct UK-Norway ferry link are on hold for the time being.

Norwegian Seaways will not launch its UK-Norway ferry service in time for summer 2014.

Judging by the response to our original story in November, that will come as bad news for a lot of people.

The plan had been to run a ferry between Newcastle, Bergen and Stavanger, re-establishing the direct ferry link between the UK and Norway that ended in 2008.

Norwegian Seaways chief operating officer Paul Woodbury told @DriveEurope by email last night, ‘We remain fully committed to the process and continue to work closely with the North East Local Enterprise Partnership and other authorities and organisation both sides of the North Sea. Raising the full capital required for a quality, compliant and sustainable ferry operation is the loadstar and whilst we are pleased to have made progress to date, until fully funded it would be inappropriate to comment further.’

However he did add, ‘I acknowledge the comments made on your website and thank you and your followers for the ongoing and positive support.’

Since DFDS withdrew from the Norway route in 2008 there has been only one direct, scheduled service between the UK and Scandinavia: DFDS Harwich to Esbjerg, Denmark.

Limited passenger places are available on DFDS Freight ships between Tilbury/Immingham-Gothenburg/Brevik. Otherwise, to reach Norway, drivers are forced to catch another ferry from northern Denmark, or cross into Sweden via the Oresund Link.

UK Ambassador meets Automaidan – Tesla charge network takes shape

Drivers’ rights groups in Ukraine meet with the British Ambassador as they face a crack down. Tesla’s network of free supercharging stations comes on stream in time for the winter holidays while the Winter Raid enjoys snow in the old fashioned way. The Mayor of Burgos relents on his plans for the city’s main thoroughfare after sustained, and violent, protest.

BRITISH AMBASSADOR MEETS WITH PRO-EU DRIVERS’ GROUP IN UKRAINE

British Ambassador to Ukraine Simon Smith, centre right, meets with members of Ukraine’s Automaidan.

The British Ambassador to Ukraine has met with members of the Automaidan drivers’ group he said today.

Automaidan has been at the forefront of the anti-government (pro-EU) movement, as have other drivers’ groups in the former Soviet Union (see here).

Simon Smith (@SimonSmithFCO) tweeted this morning, ‘Met Automaidan January 14. Underlined our concern to see fundamental freedoms upheld including right to peaceful protest.’

Automaidan members continue to come under pressure from the authorities. Reportedly, more than 900 drivers involved in recent pickets of President Yanukovych’s country house have had their licences withdrawn while one of the group’s leaders has had his assets frozen over non-payment of a two year old traffic violation.

Andriy Dzyndzya, a high profile member of Road Control, part of Automaidan – controversially imprisoned after being convicted of driving a bulldozer at riot police in the early days of the pro-EU protests in Kiev – now faces new charges over an incident early last year.

According to local reports, Dzyndzya spat so hard at a traffic officer the man was left with ‘a bruise’.

The leader of Road Control Rostislav Shapozhnikov, who fled to Poland before Christmas apparently in fear of his life, has not been heard of since according to a contact in Kiev.

update 16.01.14: a raft of new laws, presented, voted on and passed in 81 seconds today, includes – among many other anti-dissent measures – a ban on more than five cars in convoy.

TESLA WINTER SPORTS CHARGE NETWORK TAKES SHAPE

Almost non-stop good news recently

European network of Tesla Supercharger stations.

European network of Tesla Supercharger stations.

Just in time for the winter holidays, a usable network of Tesla Superchargers takes shape in Europe.

In addition to the six already installed in Norway, there are now two in the Netherlands, four in Germany and one each in Switzerland and Austria.

The latest came on stream at Oosterhout on the A27 in the Netherlands yesterday.

Owners can 50% charge their Model S in 20 minutes – or 80% in 40 minutes – for free. Each station is located on a major route and they all have eight charge points. See www.teslamotors.com/superchargers for more.

Apart from a recent spate of fires – both vehicles and at-home charge points – it’s been almost non-stop good news at Tesla recently. The important stuff anyway.

The company revealed at the Detroit Motor Show this week it sold around 1,000 more Model S than expected in the fourth quarter 2013 (full year sales were 22,400). The shares immediately shot up 16% adding $2.7bn to the firm’s market capitalisation, or $2.7m per vehicle sold reports the Detroit News.

Tesla has been expected to show a production version of its upcoming all-electric Model X SUV in Detroit. ‘It will be here at some point,’ said an executive yesterday.

Winter Raid: story of our lives this year

Winter Raid: a select field takes to the intentionally snowy roads of Graubünden, the Dolomites and Carinithia for three days of high-altitude press on motoring. Nearly sixty cars – from a 1934 Lagonda M35 Le Mans Rapide to a 1983 Mercedes G-Puch 280GE – compete in a succession of time trials and tests. To judge by the video at www.raid.ch the motors are really put through their paces. It’s not cheap at 4400CHF per couple but that’s all-in including a night at the Kempinski in St Moritz and two nights at the Miramonti Magestic in Cortina d’Ampezzo (where James Bond stayed in For Your Eyes Only).

roundup: SPAIN. After five days of riots and 40 arrests, the mayor of Burgos has called a temporary halt to the redevelopment of the city’s main thoroughfare Calle Vitoria. The €8m plan included removing one lane of traffic and replacing free parking spaces with an underground car park.

Crud Oil: ferries, fuel and Brittany Ferries’ radical new Pegasis

Brittany Ferries steals a march on new emissions rules – and its competitors – with the UK’s first gas-powered ferry.

.

Brittany Ferries new Pegasis.

Brittany Ferries’ new Pegasis.

Marine fuel is nasty stuff, literally one step up from bitumen.

Ferries’ saving grace is that their emissions are ameliorated across a large number of passengers. Thanks to that, their environmental performance is competitive with buses, trains and ferries.

In general however it was only a matter of time before the authorities cracked down on shipping emissions.

From 2015, to sail in the North Sea, Baltic or English Channel, all ships must cut fuel’s sulphur content from 3.5% now to 0.1%.

Perhaps predictably, the new EU-inspired limits are much lower than those in the rest of the world. The operators have been making dire predictions: fares will go up, jobs will be cut and even routes withdrawn as they are forced to shoulder higher costs.

Former shipping minister Mike Penning did make some very robust comments to a parliamentary committee about the new rules but has since been moved to the Northern Ireland Office.

Basically the ferry companies have three options: buy low sulphur fuel; use ‘scrubbers’ to remove pollutants from the exhaust gases; or use new, cleaner fuels.

Low sulphur fuel is more expensive due to the extra refining process and, because of that says P&O, not environmentally friendly. Meanwhile it’s not possible to fit up to 60% of the existing shipping fleet with scrubbers while converting them to new fuels is prohibitively expensive.

DFDS and P&O have been trialling scrubbers for some time. Brittany Ferries however has been able to chose the latter option with its massive new Pegasis ship announced today.

To be built in the STX shipyard in St Nazaire, the 210m cruise ferry – the same size as P&O’s recently launched Spirit of Britain – will be powered by sulphur-free Liquified Natural Gas (LNG).

LNG is an increasingly popular marine fuel around the world but this is a first for UK waters on this scale.

Costing some €270m, Pegasis will sail between the UK and Spain with all the usual refinements passengers expect on these hybrid cruise ship/ferries – swimming pool, spa, cinemas, lot of bars and restaurants plus balconies for all cabin suites. There will also be 30 pet-friendly cabins.

Pegasis will enter service from spring 2017. Quite how the other operators will meet the new regulations – or even Brittany Ferries with the rest of its fleet – is not yet completely clear.

roundup: SWEDEN. New laws on using mobile phones behind the wheel are confusing drivers, and perhaps police too. The law introduced in December says phones or GPS must not be used in a manner ‘detrimental’ to driving. Texting or talking per se is not illegal. ‘We won’t see the practical significance until after a few convictions,’ one traffic officer tells thelocal.se. AUSTRIA. A burned out Bulgarian-registered BMW X5 discovered in a Vienna suburb in the early hours of Saturday morning contained the bodies of two men. Police now say one, an Austrian of Bosnian extraction, died from gunshot wounds while the other, a German, succumbed to injuries sustained in a grenade blast. No gun has been found.

New Targa – Taxi strike France – Brussels cars vanish – Eurotunnel record

Porsche launches it’s long awaited 911 Targa featuring a very fancy roof mechanism. Paris taxi drivers go on strike. Europe’s most congested city turns up some interesting stats on car ownership while Eurotunnel sets fresh records.

.

Now the regular 911 has a glass roof – similar to the previous model Targa – it was clear Porsche would need something special on this latest generation car. It certainly has. The entire rear windscreen lifts away, as do two outer sections of the roll bar, allowing the central roof section to fold (it’s made of fabric) neatly behind the rear seats. Lots of mechanical arms are involved. See the video below to see exactly how the roof works. It doesn’t work on the move however. Interestingly, the new Targa is – slightly – cheaper than the full convertible version and the promo video featured a woman at the wheel.

PARIS TAXI STRIKE

PARIS TAXI STRIKE: no sign so far of any disruption on the roads but up to 1,000 taxis are expected to clog roads from the major airports during rush hour this morning in cities across France.

FRANCE TAXI STRIKE: Paris traffic was exceptionally busy this morning but it wasn’t clear if that was entirely down to taxi drivers on strike over ‘unfair’ competition from web-based rivals. There was however definitely slow moving taxi traffic inbound from Roissy/Charles de Gaulle airport in the north and Orly in the south. One Uber web-taxi was set upon and had its tyres slashed and windows broken. Since then queues from Orly peaked at 30mins, and from Roissy at 60mins, before lunch. This afternoon hundreds of taxis congregated around Les Invalides, south of the river to the west of the city centre where they remained until early evening. BRUSSELS. Despite still being regarded as the most congested city in Europe, the number of cars in the Belgian capital has actually fallen over the past ten years according to official figures. The number of residents has risen by 16% in the last decade while the number of cars has dropped by 7%.

EUROTUNNEL says it set new passenger records over the Christmas holidays. From 13.12.13 to 5.1.14 it carried 210,000 passenger vehicles, up around 5% on last year, and 1,400 pets, up 20% on the previous record set in August 2013. Also, the Channel Tunnel operator announced last week that 3G mobile phone services would be finally available in the UK>France tunnel, from March. The France>UK tunnel has had 3G for some time. 4G will come on stream for both tunnels in the Summer.

Paris taxi drivers fear competition from mid-engine V6 Renault Sport Megane Trophys. Not.

Five taxi unions in France go on strike tomorrow over what they see as unfair competition from new-fangled web-based firms.

The demonstrations will primarily affect Paris but have also been announced for Marseilles, Bordeaux, Montpellier and Lyon.

In Paris – from 06:00 – up to 1,000 taxis are expected to assemble at the airports Roissy-Charles de Gaulle (on the A1 in the north east) and Orly (south, N7/A106/A6b). They will then drive in procession to Invalides west of the city centre, south of the river.

In Lyon – from 07:00 – drivers will congregate at Lyon-Saint Exupery airport east of the city then drive into the centre. Roads likely to be affected include the A432 , A43 and A7.

It’s not clear as yet what if anything will happen in Bordeaux, Montpellier and Marseilles.

With plans announced in advance, as with recent anti-Ecotaxe roads demos, it’s not impossible police will close roads and/or junctions in an attempt to head off the worst of the trouble.

At the very least expect longer journeys to and from the airports. We will keep you abreast of any disruption.

POLE OF COLD ON THE ROAD OF BONES.

In need of a new thermometer.

Poleof Cold

Photo via @PoleofCold2013, www.poleofcold.com

The Pole of Cold team needs a new thermometer. Theirs only reads down to -40 degrees and they’ve been beyond that already today.

The other issue is fuel. Petrol stations are growing increasingly scarce the deeper into the wilds of Siberia they go. Each apparently has its own particular method of filling up and paying. Without fluent Russian, that can be awkward.

Locals have their ways of preventing engines from freezing. These include never turning the ignition off and/or covering bonnets with layers of cardboard and old blankets. Pole of Cold’s Land Rover Defender is fitted with a Webasto pre-heater but even that has struggled on occasion.

Considering the extreme temperatures and highly variable road conditions however, clearly things could be much, much worse.

Over the past few days the team has passed within 60km of the Chinese border, due north of Beijing – then Pyongyang, capital of North Korea – before finally turning north. They are now coming within reach of the world’s coldest inhabited place.

.

.

This stretch covers nearly 1,900km, first on the east-west M56 Amur Highway then the (approximately) north-south M58 Kolyma Highway.

M56 is a 2,100km section of the Baltic-Pacific trans-Siberian Highway. It was only fully paved in September 2010. Even President Putin calls it, ‘A dependable, modern farm road, but not the Autobahn.’

After 730km on M58, at Skovorodino, the team turned left onto M56.

M56 is also known as the Road of Bones. Built by Gulag prisoners in the Stalin era many died and were buried where they fell, under the road.

Bearing that in mind, the teams take so far on M56 is quite chilling: ‘The one and only road to Yakutsk varies from good paved sections to bad gravel tracks – mostly the latter…’

After Skovorodino the landscape changed from permafrost treeless Tundra to densely forested Taiga.

The team is now on the final stretch to Yakutsk. From there they will be roughly 700km due west of the ‘Pole of Cold’. Understandably their precise final destination has been kept under wraps so far, but it won’t be long now. And it’s set to get much, much colder.

We bring you just an overview. To learn more about the expedition follow the team on Twitter at @PoleofCold2013, or see www.poleofcold.com

ITALY – no sign of major disruption on motorways in northern Italy today during protests over New Year’s toll rises.

Supporters of the Northern League (Lega Nord) political party picketed toll booths, and boycotted the A5 Aosta Valley motorway to and from the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Demonstrations were held at many locations and were well attended. Protestors blocked some auto toll lanes but traffic in general was not impeded.

Autostrada toll rates are now at or around the same level as their French Autoroute counterparts (fuel in Italy has been among the most expensive in Europe for some time).

This is the fourth demonstration on or around the motorway network in recent months. Strikes by fuel station managers and toll station staff were averted at the last minute. A plan to paralyse the entire system last month by HGV associations ultimately came to nothing.

FREJUS TUNNEL – a truck fire overnight closed the tunnel in both directions but by 07:30 this morning it had fully re-opened.  The fire in itself wasn’t serious according to local reports, and there were no injuries, but caused very dense smoke. Paris: from midnight last night the speed limit on the Peripherique ring road was cut from 80kmh to 70kmh. The move is being justified primarily on safety grounds – a quarter of road accidents in the city happen on the Periph, half of them due to speeding according to official figures (when the cut was first suggested last year it was in order to improve air quality). Longer term the idea is to reduce the limit to 50kmh says news agency AFP, and cover the carriageway to build housing and breach the barrier between the city centre and suburbs. MyFerryLink: uncertainty continues

Final decision now expected by end of April

CVCVCVCVVCVCVC

Dover.

The Competition Commission (CC) WILL reconsider the Eurotunnel/MyFerryLink case it said in a statement today.

Back in December, the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT) queried whether the CC had jurisdiction over the matter.

The legal issue revolves around whether in buying the ferries from the defunct SeaFrance, then leasing them to SCOP – the company than now operates them on the Dover-Calais route – Eurotunnel Group had merely acquired an asset, or whether the deal effectively constituted a merger between the two companies.

If it is ultimately found that the deal was not a merger then it can go ahead without interference from the competition authorities.

The CC hopes to reach a final decision at the end of April. Interested parties should submit evidence by 22 January. The CC will then publish an interim report in late February followed by hearings if necessary in late March.

In the meantime, MyFerryLink services are expected to operate as normal.

Note: there was a common misunderstanding – shared by us – that the CC had a month to decide whether to reopen the case after the CAT’s judgement on 4 December 2013. In fact, that month was for interested parties to appeal the CAT’s decision.

Background: On 29 October 2012, the UK Office of Fair Trading handed its inquiry into Eurotunnel’s purchase of assets from SeaFrance to the Competition Commission. On 6 June 2013, CC issued a ruling requiring Eurotunnel to cease ferry operations at the Port of Dover. Following the ruling, Eurotunnel and SCOP appealed to the CAT.
